BENNETT'S WALLABY
Macropus rufogriseus
HABITAT: Scrub and woodland
STATUS: Not threatened
DESCRIPTION:
Bennett's wallabies are also known as Red-necked wallabies, due to the colouration of their
fur. Albino wallabies, whilst very rare in the wild, are far more common in captive mobs (groups).
Like all wallabies and kangaroos, they are marsupials. This comes from the word “marsupium” meaning “purse”, and refers to the pouch which all flyers, the term for females, (males are called boomers) use to keep their joeys safe until they are big enough to look after themselves.
The Latin name for this type of species is “Macropod” which literally translates to “Big Foot”. They are hardy creatures and can withstand great differences of temperature, from the burning heat of the sun to the cool of the night, when temperatures can fall below zero.
Their life span is approximately 15 years.
